Below is the Term 3 Update with information about what our students will be learning in each year level and specialist area this term.
TERM 3 UPDATE
ART
In Term 3 we will be exploring art inspired by our natural environment in Australia.
Students across the school will be introduced to artists who make artwork inspired by natural environment including many First Nations artists.
ROBOTICS
Foundation – Coding Bluebots to a specific location.
Year 1 – Bluebots in a world of mazes.
Year 2 – Ozbot app – intro to block coding.
Year 3- Creation time! Turning our visions into video games based on a book.
Year 4 – Coding Sphero Bolt’s to drive around town maps.
Year 5 – Sphero Olympics – How sporty are the Sphero Robot?
6A – Lego Spike Prime – building and coding with Lego.
6B – Tinkercad – a 3D design program for 3D printing.

PERFORMING ARTS
In Performing Arts, we are thrilled to be preparing for our highly anticipated whole school production of “Pirates of the Curry Bean”.
This swashbuckling adventure promises to be a spectacular showcase of our students’ talents of acting, singing, and dancing. Everyone will have the opportunity to participate, whether on stage or behind the scenes, as we work together to bring this entertaining and humorous story to life.
Ge ready to set sail on a journey filled with laughter, music, and unforgettable performances. Join us as we embark on this exciting theatrical adventure!
FRENCH
In Term 3, we will include discussing the history of the Bastille celebration, its origins, and its impact on French society.
Additionally, we will explore the Olympic games in depth, looking at the various sports and landmarks that are associated with the event.
Overall, Term 3 will be an exciting time for our students as they delve into the rich cultural history of France and the world through these two significant events.

FOUNDATION
Welcome to Term 3!
Each morning Foundation classes are required to line up in the Foundation area. Please enact the ‘Kiss and Go’ strategy promptly with your child and please keep the main entrance and Foundation hallway free so that we can begin with our Morning Circle in a timely manner. If you are running late, please obtain a late pass from the office and then allow your child to quietly integrate into the morning session with little interruption.
English – This term we will focus on digraphs (qu, th, sh, ch, wh) and trigraph (dge). This will be integrated into our phonic session via phonic cards and through the Orton-Gillingham (OG) program. Our writing program will build upon what we have been learning about
sentence structure and oral work in preparation for the students writing their own sentences.
Maths – This term we will focus on addition and subtraction beginning with simple worded problems and build to using a variety of language associated with these concepts and the symbols used to represent the equation. We will also introduce the CUBES strategy, which is a step by step strategy to help students solve worded problems. When learning about measurement, specifically length, mass and capacity, we will identify and compare the attributes or objects through hands on activities using materials and fun ways such as with the ‘Potato Olympics.’
Humanities – We will begin the term with a unit on First Nations Peoples to tie in with NAIDOC week and then move onto a unit on Kings and Queens.

YEAR 1
English – This term we will continue to increase our phonemic knowledge during our targeted phonics lessons focusing on the diagraphs ea, ie, ue, and ur. We will also be introducing prefixes and suffixes to build words and extend students understandings of words. In writing we will continue creating narratives and look at creating our own poetry.
Mathematics – This term we are looking at using the bar model strategy to solve addition and subtraction equations. We will learn and unpack the language of maths to help assist students understand and breakdown worded problems. Another focus will be on time, where students will learn to interpret calendars and read analogue clocks to quarter past and quarter to.
Humanities – We will begin the term exploring our unit on dinosaurs, before heading back to the new units in our Read2Learn program. We are exploring the question ‘How palaeontologists explained what features helped dinosaurs survive?’
Wellbeing – This term we will continue to explore the ‘ready to learn scale’ and ‘ready to learn plans’ following the Berry Street Model.

YEAR 3
Literacy – This term we are focusing on narrative writing, where students will continue to develop their creative writing skills. Students will be studying the novel ‘Third Grade Angels’ by Jerry Spinelli which will help them in developing their narrative writing skills.
Maths– We will continue to build our knowledge and skills when unpacking problems using the CUBES strategy and bar models. A key focus for this term will be improving number fluency and recalling multiplication and their related division facts. We will also
be investigating time to the minute and angles in everyday life.
Humanities – Students will embark on a journey exploring what life was like as a Viking in the 9th – 11th centuries! We will learn about the history, geography, culture and the global impact of this adventurous civilisation from Scandinavia.

YEAR 5
Literacy – We are about to finish our book study of the novel, ‘War Horse’. Our students have thoroughly enjoyed the story of Joey and his journey through the battlefields of World War 1. We are currently writing a persuasive piece about the issue – “should animals have been used in the war?” and students have been very passionate in their opinions, making for some fantastic writing. When we return from camp, we will be begin new novel study “Tom Appleby – Convict Boy” which is historical fiction of a young boy sent to Australia as a convict.
Maths – We will continue to develop our students’ skills in converting between fractions, decimals and percentages and apply this in the context of chance and probability. We will also be learning about BODMAS and the order of operations and some geometry rules
around angles. On Wednesdays, selected students challenge themselves to complete in the Maths Olympiad while other students practise skills at their point of need.
Humanities – We are currently finishing our unit on Early Russian History and after camp we will be beginning a unit on The Age of Exploration.

YEAR 2
English – This term we will be increasing our phonemic knowledge with “ch makes a k and sh sound,” ar, mb, que, gue, mn, gh, rh. We will also continue to focus on a variety of prefixes, suffixes and base words. In writing students will learn to use a single paragraph outline to write the first paragraph of informative and persuasive texts. We will also continue a focus on handwriting and narrative texts throughout the term.
Maths – This term we will be focusing on multiplication fast facts and division strategies. We will also continue to unpack worded
problems using the bar and CUBES model. Maths fluency is important in our learning and will always be included in the lessons.
Humanities – To begin the term we will explore the history of the Olympic Games to tie in with Paris 2024. For the remainder of the term, we will be focusing on the geography of Australia.

YEAR 4
Term 3 is jam-packed! Camp Manyung, excursions, Performing Arts performance and lots of learning!
English – Students will continue to learn a variety of letter blends and the morphology of words, through our OG Phonics program. Students will focus on the Narrative writing style this term.
Maths – Students will continue to build on their knowledge of fractions and decimals and the relationship between the two concepts. They will concurrently build their knowledge in this area progressively over the term while using concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with fractions and decimals.
Humanities – focusing on our Ancient Chinese Dynasties unit which ties in with our excursion to the Chinese Museum!

YEAR 6
Literacy: This term our Year 6 students will delve into the recent past of 1960’s Central Australia as they read the novel ‘Us Mob Walawurru’ by David Spillman and Lisa Wilyuka. The unit of work will explore our history from the view of Ruby, a young Luritja girl growing up on a cattle station and her experiences and dilemmas of cultural differences in education, language, family, relationship to country and environment. We will explore both informative and creative writing genres, continue developing our vocabulary and refining our understanding of language structures. Students will also have the opportunity to refine their research skills on our excursion to the State Library of Victoria.
Maths: In Term 3 we will continue to extend and weave our way through various maths topics that include decimals, percentages and fractions, positive and negative integers, ratios, measurements and converting measurements, data and statistics and geometric reasoning. Each day we will help students build their fluency through our Mental Maths practice and encourage students during their weekly homework practice to focus on the skills that they would like to feel more confident with.
Humanities: This unit of work will explore World Deserts through asking questions such as “what are the features of a desert?” “What are the similarities and differences between deserts around the world?” And “what strategies have aboriginal people adopted to survive the Australian desert environments?”
Weekly Homework expectations: 1 hour of maths and reading homework across the week.
